Record $6,000 Purse Posted; Fun Fan Engagement Set For July 13 ‘Thunder Car Rumble’ at Gas City I-69 Speedway

GAS CITY, Ind., May 17 – Gas City I-69 Speedway officials announced today a record $6,000-plus purse—the largest ever posted for thunder cars in the state of Indiana—for the July 13 “Thunder Car Rumble” as part of the speedway’s “Mid-Summer Showdown.”

The new event is the brainchild of three competitors and made possible with funding support from local businesses and patrons. The race will pay $700 to win and $125 to start. A normal weekly thunder car purse is $1,425, with $250 going to the winner and $40 to start. Non-wing sprint cars, UMP modifieds and FWD compacts will also be part of the evening’s exciting racing card.

Thunder cars are basically a strictly street-style, stock-appearing car that is designed to offer an affordable entry to compete in stock car racing at local tracks. To be eligible to compete in the “Thunder Car Rumble,” prior to the event both the car and driver must have participated in at least one thunder car race at Gas City I-69 Speedway this season. Remaining qualifying events are May 30, June 15, June 22 and June 29.

Cars must run either a 60- or 70-series DOT tire (no race tires); must be full-frame cars (no Camaros or super streets); motor setback must be no more than to the No. 1 spark plug, in-line with ball joints, and two- and four-barrel carburetors are allowed.

“Ervin Turner approached me about having a big thunder car race a few weeks ago,” said promoter Jerry Gappens. “Through the efforts of Ervin, D.J. Holt and Ron Flaw, local businesses and fans of the sport have pitched in financially to make this spectacular event a reality!”

Turner met Gappens at the Indy Circle Track Expo three days after the new promoter arrived in Indiana. He was excited the track was going to a full schedule of events in 2018. “I like racing at Gas City and I’m glad it’s back offering us a weekly place to race,” said Turner, explaining why he got involved. “My goal is to support the track by building up the car count and the fan base. A few of us decided this event would help accomplish that goal.”

Gappens said there will also be a major fan engagement aspect of the race, including a driver-selection pool and drawings for prizes, including gift cards.
