THUNDER CAR RULES

 

 

The purpose of this division is to provide an inexpensive way for a beginner to get into racing.  All Thunder Cars must be stock.  Inspections will be made by track techs.  Motor includes fan to flywheel, carburetor to oil pan including ignition.

 

Car must weigh 3,200 lbs. with driver at the finish of the race.  Top 3 can be weighed immediately after the feature.

 

Car and Body wheelbase and eligible models:  any American made, standard, full frame is eligible.  No unibody vehicles, Camaro, Firebird,  Nova, Pinto, Jeeps, Trucks or convertibles are allowed.  No T-Tops or sunroofs.

 

Rough driving will NOT be tolerated.  First offense will be suspension for one (1) week.  Second offense will be one (1) year from date of race.  Any drivers or crew involved in fighting will automatically be suspended for a minimum of one (1) year.

 

BODY:

 

1. The stock steel unaltered floor plan, firewall must be used.  Trunks may be cut for fuel cell only, no more than three  (3) inches of clearance around fuel cell, 1 ½ inch per side, no exceptions.  Stock wheel wells must be retained in rear.

 

2. Cars must be strictly stock.  No holes in the hood or roof.  Hood must be kept in place at all times.  Body sheet  metal must be in place at all times.

 

3. All doors must be welded.   Window net on driver’s side mandatory.

 

4. A complete firewall must seal the trunk from the driver compartment.

 

5. The only modifications allowed to the floor pan, firewalls, or trunk floors are for repair of rust area or to mount fuel cell.

 

6. Fuel cell must be mounted to trunk between frame wells, minimum 12 inches ground clearance.

 

7.  No ballast will be allowed.

 

8. After market nose panel permitted.

 

9. Tow chains on front and rear mandatory.

 

10.  Stock style bumpers only if nose and tail piece are not used.

 

WINDSHIELD AND GLASS:

 

1. ALL glass, headlights, chrome, and mirrors must be removed.  These parts must be removed prior to arrival to the track.

 

2. No broken glass shall be in the car.  Car must be swept clean.

 

3.  Full screens mandatory across the whole windshield and must have four (4) vertical bars, 3/8 inch diameter in front of the driver, mounted to cage, 3/8 inch bars minimum.  Number on right top of window, 12 inch square.

 

ENGINE/BLOCK:

 

1. Engine block must be exactly as produced by the manufacturer.  Small block only.  No aluminum blacks.   No 400 blocks.  No guide plates or poly locks on valves.  Block numbers will be checked, all blocks must have legible numbers.

 

2. Stock appearing only from carburetor to oil pan.

 

3. After market air filter is permitted.

 

4.  Must idle stock.

 

CYLINDER HEADS:

 

1. OEM stock heads only.  No aftermarket, bowtie, or aluminum heads.  No port work allowed.  NO roller rockers.  Stock head for year, make, and model of body.  Tall valve covers are allowed.

 

INTAKE MANIFOLD:

 

1. Must be strictly stock for make and model.  Case iron intake manifold only.  NO tall performance or marine intakes allowed.  NO cutting on inside of intake area.  NO porting or polishing of intake runners, you will be made to pull the carburetor to inspect the intake.

 

EXHAUST:

 

1. Cast iron stock exhaust manifolds, with no modifications, as provided on engine  NO center dump style permitted.

 

2. Exhaust must terminate behind driver and within 18 inches of rear end housing.

 

 

CARBURETOR:

 

1. Carburetor must be stock OEM street applicable, 2 barrel Rochester only.  Air filter mandatory, must be stock type.  No air induction, ram rubes, or air boxes.

 

2. No double pumps.

 

3. Fords and Mopars may run Holley carburetor applicable to year, make, and model.

 

FUEL SYSTEM:

 

1. Stock components only as produced by manufacturer.

 

ELECTRICAL/BATTERY:

 

1. NO dial point distributors.

 

2. Stock coil in stock location, must use stock distributor.

 

3. Battery must be securely mounted in battery box and covered.

 

TRANSMISSION

 

1. Stock automatic transmission with at least three (3) forward gears, reverse must work.

 

2. NO Power Glides at all.

 

COOLING SYSTEM:

 

1. Stock radiator in stock location.

 

2. Aluminum or plastic radiators allowed.  No electric fans.

 

REAR-END DIFFERENTIAL:

 

1. Posi-traction, limited slip, locked, or welded rear ends permitted.

 

2. Rear end differential must match make and model of body used.  Nine (9) inch Ford rear ends, including floaters, are legal.  Brakes must be in stock location.  Race axles are highly recommended.

 

BRAKES:

 

1. No altering of stock brakes allowed.

 

2.  Brake pedal must remain in stock location.

3. Cars must have functional brakes on all four (4) wheels.

 

4. No brake bias/proportional valve permitted.

 

FRAMES:

 

1. Body and frame components must be exactly the same as year, make, and model used.  No shifting or moving of any body parts allowed.

 

2. Complete bumper to bumper stock frame must be retained other than repairs needed to fix areas due to rust or damage.

 

3. Repairs to stub must maintain exact measurements as originally produced.

 

SUSPENSION:

 

1. No modification of the suspension allowed.  Suspension arms must remain absolutely stock and unaltered for the make and model used.

 

2. No coil over, overload, cargo ratchet, or air assisted shocks permitted.

 

3. Racing springs allowed.  All springs must be/retain stock height.

 

4. No racing shocks permitted.

 

5. Metric cars can reinforce upper frames only.

 

WHEELS:

 

1. Re-inforced racing type wheels mandatory.  Right rear bead locks permitted.

 

2. Maximum wheel width is eight (8) inches.

 

3. Any loss of a wheel or tire requires a driver to immediately pull into the infield.

 

4. One-inch lug nuts are mandatory.

 

TIRES:

 

1. No grooving, siping, or soaking.

 

2. Absolutely no racing tires disguised as DOT tires.

 

3. May run 70 series DOT approved tires.

 

4. Bead lock wheels permissible on right rear and right front.

 

GAS TANK INSTALLATION:

 

1. Fuel cell mandatory.  32 gallon maximum capacity.  Bracing in trunk for fuel cell permitted.

 

2. No electric fuel pumps permitted.  No fuel lines in the driver compartment.

 

3. Tech inspector must approve installation.

 

4. Fuel line from trunk to the engine compartment must be steel or steel braided.  No copper or rubber allowed.

 

SAFETY:

 

1. A four post roll cage must be used with three (3) door bars on the driver’s door.  Driver’s door must have 1/8 inch steel plate on door bars.  Window net on driver’s side mandatory.

 

2. Cage can be braced rearward to the frame where it starts to kick up over the rearend.  Bars may be added from firewall forward to protect frame and radiator.  Front firewall, front or rear hoops optional.

 

3. All drivers must use an approved, 5-point safety harness and crotch belt.  The tech inspector must approve all seatbelt installations.  None shall be more than five (5) years old.

 

4. All drivers must wear both a firesuit and helmet.  Helmet must have a Snell rating of 9 or newer.  Both are mandatory and must be approved by track tech.  Racing shoes are gloves are also mandatory.  Full racing suit required.

 

5. Always stay in your car with seatbelts and helmet on.  Do not get out of car during race unless you have a fire.

 

6. If a hood raises during a race, go to the infield immediately.

 

7. Drive shaft must be painted white and have a driveshaft loop.  No chains.

 

If you are caught cheating after a race, you will be disqualified for the night.  You will lose winnings for the night, plus your points for the night.  If you are caught cheating a second time, you will be barred for two weeks and lose all points for the year.
